How to Sell Your Luxury Watch for Cash in Switzerland Without Auction Fees

The Swiss watch market is healthy, but auction fees can approach a third of your watch's value and payment can take months. Here's what each route really costs in Switzerland — and how to sell your watch directly for a binding offer, without the auction fee machinery.
How to Sell Your Luxury Watch for Cash in Switzerland Without Auction Fees

The Swiss secondary watch market is in good health. According to the Knight Frank Luxury Investment Index (April 2026, based on WatchCharts data), the secondary watch market climbed 5.1% over the past year, with the Patek Philippe index up 12.1%. Yet turning a fine watch into cash remains surprisingly expensive. Route it through a major auction house and the combined fees on a typical lot can approach a third of the watch's value, and the money can take months to arrive. Here is what each route really costs in Switzerland, and how to sell directly, without the auction fee machinery.

What Does Selling at Auction Really Cost?

Start with the buyer's side, because every dollar a bidder pays in premium is a dollar they cannot bid on your watch. At Geneva watch sales, Phillips charges buyers a premium of 27% of the hammer price up to CHF 1.6 million (schedule effective April 2026), and Swiss VAT of 8.1% is payable on both the hammer price and the premium unless the watch is exported. Sotheby's raised its lower-tier buyer's premium to 28% in February 2026, and Christie's charges 27% on the first USD 1.5 million under its September 2025 schedule.

Then comes your side. Seller's commission may range from 0% to 10% or more, and consignors can additionally bear charges for insurance, marketing, shipping, restoration, storage and catalogue illustration. The rules also keep moving: Sotheby's changed its fee structure three times between 2024 and 2026, so the deal you researched last year may no longer exist.

How Long Does an Auction Sale Take?

Geneva's flagship watch sales run twice a year, in May and November. Phillips held The Geneva Watch Auction: XXIII on 9 and 10 May 2026; miss a window and you wait roughly six months for the next one. Even after the hammer falls, buyers typically have five business days to pay, and the auction house pays the seller around 30 to 45 days after the closing date. And none of this is guaranteed: if your lot fails to reach its reserve, you start over, with the unsold result on public record.

What About Dealers, Pawn Loans or a Private Sale?

Dealers are faster but conservative. Bucherer, after an in-person appraisal, will either decline to purchase or make two offers, one for an outright sale and one for a trade-in credit note. Pawn lending is not a sale at all: one licensed Ticino pawnbroker charges an effective annual interest rate of 16.5% and typically advances only one-third to one-sixth of an item's market value. A private sale avoids fees but leaves authentication, security, payment risk and finding a serious buyer entirely to you.

The Direct Route: A Binding Offer, Discreet Execution

This is the gap FinanceFarm was built for. You submit your watch discreetly, sending images, key details and documents securely in digital form, and receive a non-binding initial assessment, with an express pre-check within 48 hours. Our team pre-screens plausibility, category and marketability in a well-founded review, then analyzes market potential across comparables, demand and pricing scope. On that basis you receive a binding purchase offer with clearly structured, transparent terms. The agreement is secured through a clean contract, a KYC-compliant review and personal coordination, and once the transaction is completed, your payout is made. There is no public auction, no catalogue and no sale-season wait: your asset is instead placed in a structured way on the FinanceFarm platform, where registered co-participants join the participation round, and any outreach beyond that is targeted and discreet, without unnecessary public exposure. A personal seller contact supports you from the initial assessment through to payout.

Demand on the other side is deep and growing: Deloitte's research on the pre-owned watch market finds it growing faster than the primary market.
